Quick take

What it is: SLO stands for scanning laser ophthalmoscopy. It creates a high-resolution image of your retina, macula, and optic nerve.

Why it matters: Clearer images help us catch changes earlier and tailor your care.

What you feel: A few seconds looking at a target. No pain, no contact, no puff of air.

What is SLO imaging?

SLO imaging is a safe, low-light scan that produces detailed pictures of the inside of your eye. Think of it as a high-definition photo album of your eye health that we can compare year over year.

Optomap SLO imaging is a modern alternative to traditional pupil dilation. While dilation requires eye drops that temporarily blur vision and cause light sensitivity for several hours, SLO (Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy) captures a wide, high-resolution image of the retina quickly and comfortably—often without the need for dilation. The biggest benefit of SLO is that it allows doctors to view a much larger portion of the retina, helping detect early signs of eye disease more efficiently. For patients, it means a faster exam experience, clearer vision afterward, and a more convenient visit overall.

Why we use it for your eye exam

Earlier detection

Subtle changes show up sooner on SLO, so we can act before small issues become big problems.

Sharper detail

Crisp images help confirm diagnoses and fine-tune your prescription.

Fast and comfortable

The scan takes seconds. Most people say it’s the easiest part of the visit.

Better tracking over time

We save your images to monitor trends and explain results with side-by-side comparisons.

Who benefits most

Styes occur when oil glands or hair follicles become clogged, trapping bacteria inside. Risk factors include:

  • Diabetes, glaucoma risk, or family history of eye disease
  • Changes in vision, new flashes or floaters
  • Heavy screen time or contact lens wear
  • Anyone who wants a thorough, modern eye exam

  3. Your doctor reviews the images with you, explains findings in plain language, and shares next steps if needed.

Time in chair: a few minutes
Comfort: non-invasive and low light
